A REWARDING RETIREMENT: contributing to your community

When Tony Dickason joined Cross Country Rentals (CCR) more than six years ago, little did he know at the time just how rewarding his role would be.

After a career spanning more than 30 years in Information Technology, Tony upskilled to become a Specialised School Transport Assistance (SESTA) driver, delivering the Ministry of Education transport service that assists children and young people with special needs to travel to school safely.

“For me, I’ve found it so rewarding to take children to school and help families who really need it as opposed to sitting behind a computer,” says Tony, who is now a Project Manager for CCR who is contracted by the Ministry to provide SESTA services in many parts of New Zealand.

“I’ve enjoyed establishing trust and relationships with the families and there’s an enormous job satisfaction that comes from helping others. In semi-retirement or full retirement, driving young people to school gives you a reason to get up in the morning and make someone’s day.”

Even though there is a sense of autonomy being a SESTA driver, you are part of a terrific team with CCR.

CCR is currently recruiting for casual and permanent part time driving roles in different parts of the country and newcomers to the industry are fully trained and inducted.

Once training is completed, they typically will have access to a late model vehicle, that can be based at home, so there are no transport costs getting to work.

“While there is a sense of autonomy in this role, you are part of a wider team that provides an excellent service and it’s a great way to give back to the community you live in,” says Tony.

“Not only is it an opportunity to earn a few extra dollars to top up one’s pension but you have the school holidays off to spend with your own family and friends.”

CCR, is part of the Tranzit Group – New Zealand’s largest family-owned bus, coach and tourism company. Tranzit is also recruiting for school bus drivers in various locations throughout the North Island.
