From the Editor…September 2026

Hello readers,

As always, the weeks go by fast and what seems like a few months ago, is actually a couple of years as was the case when I caught up with a former acquaintance who I now count as a friend.

Many members will know David Hartnell as that engaging gossip columnist who has whispered celebrity secrets through almost sealed lips!

I first met David some 50 years ago when i was a young journalist writing a series on fashion fetishes and, as some may recall, David loved his bow ties. It wasn’t until 2021 that I caught up with him again and… “what sweet reunion!”

Writing at that time for EastLife magazine, it was an honour to look back on and share David’s quite extraordinary life and career journey – drag act, roller skating star, amateur magician, make-up artist, celebrity journalist and so much more.

However, as is often the case, after meeting several times, life took its usual unexpected turns.

It wasn’t until July this year that we again had a chance to reminisce over coffee and an appetising selection of entrees created in the kitchen of Richmond Road’s Thai Thai Restaurant, which he and long-time partner, Somboon own.

Of course, this corner between Grey Lynn and Herne Bay was my own stamping ground when growing up. Although David lived a suburb or two away then, he now resides close to my old home.

For someone who has just turned 82, (but remains ever young in looks and outlook), buying a restaurant might seem brave but for David and Somboon who, incidentally, married just a few weeks ago, it has proved extremely satisfying.

After nearly two hours of chat, it was time for one more hug and promises to catch up later in the year. This time I hope nothing intervenes. And, with that, it’s a toast David and Somboon and to a great honeymoon cruise. What’s more, if members want a good read, look out for David’s book, Memoirs of a Gossip Columnist – thoroughly entertaining as expected!

Now, readers can prepare for the November election, which could be a very close call after a great deal of conflict over the past couple of months.

All the best.
