From the Editor: September 2024

Hello readers, after Grey Power’s successful AGM in Wellington, which coincided with the retirement of David Porter, long time and dedicated editor of this magazine, I’ve been appointed to take on the role.

Let me introduce myself: I’m Helen Perry, a journo with more than 50 years print experience. I started out at the New Zealand Herald a long time ago! After 11 years I took time out to have a family then joined independently-owned community newspaper group, Times Newspapers Ltd. I was with the company for 34 years.

After heading the company’s magazine division I ‘retired’ at the end of 2021. But retirement soon proved to be off the agenda.

I continued to write for the company’s former flagship magazine, Rural Living and also took on some part time marketing work for Pukekohe’s Franklin Club. Then, recently, I was asked to oversee Grey Power’s informative magazine. So, here I am and delighted too!

For sure, this is a role I will relish and while maintaining established input, I also look forward to bringing readers the occasional feature story highlighting that life after 65 can be full and rewarding for many people. I have met some wonderful senior folk who are turning their talents to good and making an impact on society. I hope their stories will inspire others.

In the meantime, I am starting to familiarise myself with Grey Power and all it offers. I look forward to sharing a few words with you each quarter and hope you will share some thoughts with me. What’s more, as spring has now sprung, here’s hoping we can all look forward to some warm, sunny weather to re-energise us after a cold, wet winter in many parts.

A big thank-you to David for all he has done for the magazine, good luck in the future and…

Cheers to all, Helen
