Did you know that botanically speaking, bananas are berries because they develop from a single flower with one ovary, have a fleshy interior, and a protective outer skin (peel). While culinary terms often differ, scientifically, bananas, tomatoes, grapes, and even avocados fit the berry criteria, while raspberries and blackberries do not.
In fact, raspberries and blackberries are members of the rose family as are cherries, apricots, plums, pears, apples, quinces, peaches, and strawberries. However, unlike roses, these types of fruits typically have flowers with five equal petals arranged around a central core but just like roses, raspberries (and blackberries) have plenty of thorns!
On the subject of bananas, did you know they float in water and that the skin is said to help relieve the itching from mosquito bites? Some say eating bananas can also help the nervous system, restore tired muscle tissues and ‘boost bored brains.’ While they are also believed to be among the world’s oldest fruits dating back more than 10,000 years.
