Membership survey highlights

Thanks to the 1500+ members who participated in the December 2024 survey. The Board valued hearing from our members on a wide range of issues.

Key areas surveyed included advocacy issues for 2025, the effectiveness of the quarterly Federation magazine and the need to significantly reduce ballooning postage costs and evaluation of potential new logo options.

Your ratings for the work we are doing as a Federation were encouraging – all 80% or higher ratings as shown in the chart opposite.

Website familiarity

What was of concern was that 41% of respondents had not seen the Federation website. This probably understates the overall percentage of our membership which has not seen the Federation website (www.greypower.co.nz) as those answering the survey had some familiarity with the growing digital world. Favourable ratings

A measure that the Board will track as we go forward with new developments is the Net Promoter Score (NPS). NPS measures members loyalty by looking at their likelihood of recommending the organisation.

The NPS score can range from -100 to +100, where a higher score is desirable. Our NPS in this survey was 37. This is rated as being favourable, with scores over 50 being considered excellent. In comparison with other NZ industries and organisations assessed in 2024, we scored well – Education 25, Hospitality 25, Insurance 19, Real
Estate -1, Medical Practitioners 37, Power 17.

While ratings for the Federation magazine were very high, recent significant increases in postage has meant that the annual cost of mailing the magazine to every household exceeds $200,000 annually.

This expense is basically preventing the Board from investing in other activities to increase the voice of Grey Power with more research, creation of Issue papers, visits to Parliament, and more support to our associations.

After much debate the Board has recommended that there be a $10 annual sub per household for those wanting the magazine to be delivered to their home. For those happy with access to the digital version of the magazine, access will continue to be free of charge to every member. The survey evaluated your response to this decision.

  • 23% of respondents already subscribe to the digital version and another 41% stated they would switch to the digital version. A small percentage of those switching to digital also stated that they would subscribe for home delivery as well.
  • 25% stated they would be willing to pay the annual $10 sub for home delivery.
  • Around 9% were unsure of how they would respond.

Some 5% made comments about the magazine decision, with many being very supportive, but some felt we may be disadvantaging those who were not tech savvy. Others offered practical recommendations. More information on the planned transition to a home delivery subscription.

New logo evaluated

Respondents were asked to evaluate five alternative possible logos to replace the current GPF logo which is looking dated and not used by many of our associations. Details on the evaluation scores for each are available on the website, but the clear preference was for the logo above.

More than 400 respondents made comments, and these will take time to fully evaluate. Responses ranged from positive comments on various logos, strong feelings against some, how some logos could be improved, preference for the existing logo, requests to change from the old logo and concern about cost of logo development and creation of badges. These will be considered prior to the final decision being announced.

Priority ratings

The final section of the survey asked for priority ratings for a number of issues, summarised above. Clearly maintenance of current New Zealand Super benefits, and issues regarding our crumbling health system were of highest priority to the membership.
