With more than 1000 islands, a long and sunny coastline and a rich history, Croatia is a treat for the senses. Brett Barclay, director of boutique travel company, World Journeys, rates Croatia as one of his favourite places on earth, and says:
“My affinity with the sea is matched only by my affinity with lying around in the sun, swimming in crystal clear waters, and sipping coffee at sidewalk cafes in picturesque villages – I was bound to love Croatia!
“I spent an incredible week weaving in and around the gorgeous islands and coast line of southern Croatia. Days were spent relaxing on the deck, reading, and swimming when the heat of the day hit. We would pull into a different island each day, to picture-perfect whitewashed villages with terracotta roofs, olive groves and vineyards on rocky landscapes.
“Simple, but good, food could be had in the local tavernas in the evening, where locally produced wines and equally fruity local characters made for a fantastic and authentic atmosphere.
“On the bigger islands you can find ancient walled cities just oozing with history. The island of Korcula was a favourite. Said to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, the old walled town is a veritable history book with a strong arts and culture heritage. I will return!”
