Grey Power thrives after four decades

Born in protest, built on principle — Grey Power marks 40 years of defending fairness for older New Zealanders

As Grey Power New Zealand marks 40 years of advocacy, the organisation is revisiting the powerful images which sparked a nationwide movement — photographs which captured the determination of seniors who refused to accept unfair treatment.

The archival collection includes images from 1986, when a small group of Auckland superannuitants stood firmly together to oppose the introduction of a surcharge on New Zealand Superannuation.

What began as a grassroots protest rapidly gained momentum across the country, ultimately leading to the abolition of the surcharge and the formation of a strong, independent voice for older New Zealanders.

Further images from the 1990s show Grey Power members gathered at Parliament grounds and in communities nationwide rallying against asset testing and policies affecting retirement security.

These photographs are more than historical records — they are a clear reminder of collective resolve and principled action.

Retiring Grey Power national president, Gayle Chambers says the anniversary is both a celebration and a call to remain vigilant.

“Forty years ago, older New Zealanders stood up because they understood that retirement security is not a privilege — it is a right earned through a lifetime of contribution,” she says.

“Those early protests were driven by principle, not politics. They were about fairness, dignity and respect for senior Kiwis.

From protest to national clout

“These images remind us that meaningful change happens when ordinary people refuse to be overlooked. Grey Power was built on courage and conviction — and that foundation still guides us today.”

Mrs Chambers says the 40-year milestone reinforces the organisation’s ongoing responsibility.

“The challenges may look different in 2026, but the need for strong advocacy has not diminished. From healthcare pressures and rising living costs to digital security and community safety, older Kiwis must continue to have a powerful, independent voice. Grey Power remains committed to ensuring that voice is heard.”

The commemorative photo archive will feature in anniversary publications, online platforms and local association events throughout the year. Grey Power invites members and the wider community to reflect on the journey from protest to national influence — and to stand together for the next chapter.
