Dealing with pet panic on Guy Fawkes night

Guy Fawkes night is still two months away but as our magazine is published after this ‘sky-lighting’ event it seemed appropriate to remind readers that it can be a stressful time for pets.

With that in mind here are a few tips to make this explosive night stress-free:

  • Keep pets indoors with windows shut and curtains closed. Have music on the TV so familiar sounds can help drown out the bangs and noise.
  • Create a place where your pet can feel more secure. If your dog is crate-trained put him/her in the crate and cover the crate with a blanket. A cardboard box with a bed in it and a towel over the entrance is a good hiding place for a cat.
  • If an evening walk with the dog is part of your routine, do it is early, before dark when fireworks generally begin.
  • Never punish pets for anxious behaviour. This will make them more fearful.
  • Behave calmly. While cuddling and petting can be reassuring sometimes too much can reinforce anxious behaviour.
  • Ensure pets are microchipped. If in the event a pet escapes house and run aways, it can then be easily identified if found.
  • There are some natural anti-anxiety options for animals that become very stressed by fireworks including capsules for dogs or liquids for cats – check with your pet shop or vet.

FINALLY, never let off fireworks in close proximity to any animal.
