It is with great sadness that the Grey Power Federation Board records the passing of former president, Jan Pentecost QSM.
A tireless advocate for seniors throughout her 14 years on the Board, Jan served first as national secretary, then stepped up as the first female president of Grey Power Federation.
Her quiet determination to see the Federation as an effective advocacy organisation was unwavering and she worked tirelessly, often up to 60 hours a week, to represent the issues and interests of all members.
Whether it was addressing a particular concern around aged care, health concerns, superannuation, or advocating for wider policy and legislative change, she put her best foot forward.
Often away from home on federation business for days on end, Jan’s work ethic saw her held in high regard by many Government ministers. She always strived to make a positive difference for senior Kiwis, doing so with determination and grit and always in good humour.
In 2018 Jan was honoured with the Queen’s Service Medal and that same year she was made a Federation life member
Jan clearly understood the changing face of New Zealand – and the impending changing face of retirees. Grey Power Federation vice-president and acting-president, David Marshall recalls Jan as a tireless advocate for seniors.
“As the Federation’s first female president, Jan worked diligently to foster good relationships with key politicians, government agencies, kindred organisations, and commissions so that our advocacy work could reach those who had the power to make a difference for seniors.
“However, Jan was also champion of our grassroots membership and the time she spent on listening to, and responding to members’ local and personal issues as seniors, was outstanding,” he says.
“We have lost a committed advocate who was instrumental in building the credibility of the work of the Federation. She has left a legacy on which Grey Power continues to build.”
Grey Power Federation Board extends heartfelt condolences to Jan’s husband Tony and family.
