Conservation of our forests and birds is vital ongoing work and once again Grey Power members can help by supporting the 2025 Bird of the Year contest which is all go from September 15.
This year, Forest & Bird celebrates 20 years since the event was launched and it has become a calendar favourite for thousands of New Zealanders.
Voting opens on Monday, September 15 and closes on Sunday, September 28. The winning bird will be announced on Monday, September 29.
Most folk are just keen to register their votes but why not become a volunteer campaign manager to spur voters on. It can be great fun finding ways to get ‘your’ bird ahead in the polls.
Most mangers go all out by making use of social media, creating videos, selling T-shirts or taking to the streets to encourage participation and votes.
Past winners have included the rock wren, kakapo, hoi hoi (yellow eyed penguin and recognized twice in past years), the Australasian crested grebe and even the long-tailed bat among others.
Support is again crucial as so many native birds are in trouble, some in serious trouble such as the takahe; matuku moana or reef heron; the South Island kokako; karearea or NZ falcon; kotuku or white heron; ngutu pare or wrybill and many more.
