There is an emerging trend globally for people to start a business for the first time in later life. What’s more, 45 percent of the self-employed are in New Zealand, according to a new book published by New Zealander, Angela Robertson.
She describes them as “Entrepreneurs over the age of 50”, a trend that has been steadily increasing since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
These individuals challenge the stereotypical belief that advancing age narrows down life choices.
It doesn’t. In fact, the desire to develop and utilise our skills, set new priorities, choose a more meaningful career path, accomplish new things, generate an income, and have a positive impact within our communities, or the wider world, grows stronger with age.
In her book, Changing Gears: Entrepreneurs @ 50+, Robertson showcases the stories of 33 awesome, later-life entrepreneurs in New Zealand.
While everyone’s story is different, none of these individuals accepted the status quo. Changing gears, they all set off on a journey of what they really wanted to do.
This inspirational, easy-to-read book also offers lots of tips, and useful websites for anyone who is considering going down this route on either a part-time or fulltime basis.
