Winter 2025 has delivered some extremely cold temperatures even in parts of the country often considered relatively warm despite the season. What’s more, there is sure to be more cold nights before late spring brings warmer times.
That means electric blankets are likely still in full use, keeping beds – and their occupants – warm and cosy. However, if safety checks weren’t done early in the season, now is the time to ensure electric blankets are still fit for use.
Remember, an electric blanket should be used only to warm the bed before getting in – turn it off before going to sleep.
Ensure it is flat on the bed and that controls and cords are not twisted or caught between the mattress and the bed base. A twisted cord can cause a fire. Never place heavy objects on the bed when the electric blanket is turned on.
Important – check for hotspots by turning your electric blanket on high for 15 minutes, then switching it off and running your hand over the blanket.
If a hot spot is detected, immediately unplug the blanket and do not use until it has been inspected by a qualified electrician or replaced with a new one. A hot spot indicates damage to the heating element which could potentially lead to a fire or an electric shock.
Check that your electric blanket is less than five years old – at the first sign of wear, replace it or have it checked by a registered electrician.
When storing away at the end of winter, make sure it is rolled not folded.
