The Power of Grey Power

Shaping a better future for New Zealand seniors

A wide range of issues which matter to older New Zealanders were addressed at the recent Grey Power Federation annual meeting in Wellington

Key topics included lobbying for fair superannuation policies, improving healthcare access and in-home care, and safeguarding senior rights. Exciting new initiatives such as enhancing Grey Power’s digital presence to keep members better connected and informed were also introduced.

Acting-president and AGM chair, David Marshall, was delighted with the constructive input from speakers and delegates. While some topics and remits provoked spirited debate, other proposals received unanimous support.

In his acting-president’s report to the delegates, David focused on some of the highlights, as well as the challenges going forward. In particular, a governance review of the board by three mature MBA students highlighted that the current governance/management role (inherited by the board), is no longer fit for purpose as the organisation moves forward.

“Board members risk burn-out trying to juggle responsibilities. A new structure is required to ensure an effective advocacy organisation,” David says. “This is being work-shopped at the August board meeting and recommendations will follow.”

Pleasingly a draft new constitution to meet the new regulations was agreed to and will be submitted to the Incorporated Societies for endorsement prior to the development of a template for associations to utilise. Completion is planned for later this year.

Lew Findlay was congratulated at the AGM for his successful management of the federation’s finances and ensuring that the finances were in a more sustainable position at the conclusion of the 2023 financial year.

Attended by representatives from local associations nationwide, delegates, board members, and portfolio chairs reinforced the organisation’s dedication to ensuring the voices of seniors are heard loud and clear within New Zealand’s political landscape.

Guest speakers included the CEO of Pulse Energy, Sharnie Warren; the Minister for Seniors and Associate Minister for Health, Casey Costello; Aged Care Commissioner, Carolyn Cooper, and the CEO of Age Concern NZ, Karen Billings-Jensen.

Casey Costello, Minister for Seniors

In her address, Ms Costello said she was proud to be at the AGM because Grey Power is doing the same as she is trying to do – advocate and stand for the rights of older New Zealanders.

“I know many older New Zealanders on fixed incomes, are facing enormous challenges to meet the increased cost of living. Food, power, insurance and rates continue to rise; on a fixed income this creates enormous challenges.

“We also know that many older New Zealanders are still paying a mortgage after the age they intended to stop working. Increasing numbers are also renting.

“Worryingly, there are some who are without a home at all, living in emergency housing and temporary accommodation; that’s why housing is a priority along with options to address cost of living pressures.”

Ms Costello said some key coalition agreements were maintaining current eligibility conditions for New Zealand’s superannuation and supporting the winter energy payments for superannuitants.

A highlight for delegates was the honouring of retiring national president, Jan Pentecost for her 14 years of dedicated service to the board, initially as national secretary, and then as national president for four years.

National secretary, Jo Miller, gave a humorous but touching address acknowledging Jan’s sterling service and absolute commitment to effective advocacy. Jan and her husband, Tony, were then presented with a travel voucher from the federation and associations to help them enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

The bulk of the remits considered and approved at the AGM related to the new constitution meeting new regulatory requirements. Remits were also passed focusing on issues such as improved communication, authorisation of only publicly controlled fireworks displays, investigation of a national rates postponement scheme, free prostate screening, and provision for those who are not digitally enabled.

Election of Board Officers in 2024 were: National president, Gayle Chambers; national treasurer, Lew Findlay (unopposed). Thanks to all delegates, board members, zone directors, hotel staff, audio visual staff, speakers and sponsors for a productive 2024 AGM.
