Time to tick off this bucket list beauty

Is travelling along 142 km of abandoned railway line through one of the most breathtakingly beautiful locations in New Zealand on your bucket list? If not add it straight in at #1. This is a must-do for travellers of any age and ability seeking one of the most authentic and enchanting experiences on offer.

The seldom seen area between Stratford and Taumarunui is often referred to as the Forgotten World. Heralded as a remarkable engineering feat which took almost 32 years to complete, the historic Stratford-Okahukura railway line was mothballed in 2010 and now forms a private gateway for those eager to experience the King Country in a premium setting, combining geographical exploration with cultural discovery.

Forgotten World Adventures are experts in immersive, guided experiences throughout this spectacular destination. Choose from six unique adventures, ranging from a half-day to 4-days, each featuring an iconic rail cart journey. The carts are self-driven (2, 4 or 6 seaters) and with a maximum speed of 22km per hour, the pace is slow enough not to miss anything and sufficiently speedy on the straights!

The line tells its own story which is further enriched by your guide, whose passion for their region’s history and storytelling about the early settlers and hardy pioneers is shared during scheduled stops. As well as passing through some of (or all if you do the 2-day ‘Ultimate’) the line’s 24 hand-built tunnels – the longest is an impressive 1.5km long – the line boasts over 90 bridges.

You’ll see remnants of original settlements and once-thriving towns that time has forgotten as you meander through the open hill country and pristine native bush. Prepare to indulge in Midge’s homebaking and hot/cold refreshments throughout your trip (all experiences include rail-side food and drinks plus transfers).

Experiences can also include a scenic jet boat ride on the Whanganui River (including the longest commercial jet boat ride in the Southern Hemisphere), helicopter flight over the National Park, visits to the Bridge to Nowhere and Lauren’s Lavender Farm plus unique stays at the Whangamōmona Hotel and Blue Duck Station. Consider booking a stopover at the Forgotten World Motel for your comfort and convenience – all adventures leave from their front door and they offer a hearty cooked breakfast!

So go right ahead! Update your bucket list and book a front row seat for this unique kiwi adventure. You certainly won’t regret or forget it; you’ll just be left wondering why you didn’t do it sooner.
