If you’ve never been on an exciting African Safari you probably can’t imagine what a ‘game-drive’ is like. It’s where those “I don’t-believe-it!” moments happen. It’s what people go to Africa for.
Come early morning while it’s still dark, or mid-afternoon when the land is cooling down, you pile into your waiting 4WD and bounce off across Africa’s wildlife parks. The roof is up, so you can stand for better photos and your sharp-eyed African driver is already scanning the landscape, picking up clues you can’t see even with binoculars.
Words can’t really describe the sights, sounds, smells and silences that await you … the sunburnt savanna stretching to the horizon … the lush woodlands swarming with birdlife … and the sheer abundance of free-to-roam wildlife.
Sometimes on a game-drive you’re surrounded by migrating herds of wildebeests, zebras and gazelles. Other times you’ve gotta be patient, because big cats especially like their privacy. Often the first hint that “something’s out there” is a tiny upright shape on a far-off anthill (a cheetah mum with cubs?) … or a tail hanging down out of a tree (an elusive leopard?) … or a camouflaged shadow in the long grass (a hungry lion stalking his prey?) … or suddenly panicked antelopes (an ambush underway?) …
And you never know what else is waiting, just around the corner! A bad-tempered buffalo, eager to charge … a fat hippo, harmless looking but lethally dangerous … a long-necked giraffe, sneaking a drink at a waterhole … a short-sighted rhino, grazing in the grassland … a butt-ugly hyena lurking in the undergrowth … a family of majestic elephants with playful babies, enjoying a swampy salad!
