Retirement with dignity

It’s 2026 and for many retirees, what matters most comes down to something simple: security. The security of knowing your income will keep pace with the cost of living. The security of being able to see a doctor when you need to. The security of knowing your grandchildren can build a future here in New Zealand.

Right now, that sense of security feels under pressure. Grocery bills are higher. Power bills keep climbing. Insurance and council rates are stretching fixed incomes further than they were ever meant to go. When you’ve worked hard all your life and planned carefully for retirement, you shouldn’t feel anxious every time another bill arrives.

Healthcare is another concern. Many retirees are waiting longer to see specialists, facing rising GP fees or watching local services struggle. A strong public health system isn’t a luxury in retirement – it’s essential. That’s why Labour is committed to three free doctor’s visits for all New Zealanders.

Labour’s focus is steady and practical: protecting the dignity of retirement while building a stronger economy to support the services we all rely on. That means restoring confidence in our health system, investing in the workforce which keeps it running, and ensuring older New Zealanders can access timely care close to home.

It also means easing cost-of-living pressure where we can, including support with energy costs in winter, and policies which recognise many retirees live on fixed incomes. It means giving certainty around NZ Superannuation and ensuring it keeps up with wages and inflation.

After decades of contribution to this country, retirees deserve stability – not constant debate about the goalposts moving. At the same time, we know many are thinking about the next generation.

You want them to have opportunities here – not feel they must leave for Australia to get ahead. A growing, productive economy should give young people a reason to stay, while protecting the retirement security you’ve earned.

For retirees, this isn’t just about today’s pressures. It’s about respecting a lifetime of contribution and ensuring retirement is lived with dignity and confidence.
