Good news! For many years Grey Power has advocated to government to raise the income threshold to be eligible for the Rates Rebate.
Until now the income threshold has been set close to the single NZ Superannuation income. This has meant many married couples have found it challenging to qualify for a full Rates Rebate, despite facing annual increases in council rates far exceeding the CPI.
At our recent meeting with the Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon (see page 9) Grey Power once again urged the Government to address the increasing burden of rates for our retirees. Thankfully, our voice has been heard and in the May 2025 budget this issue was addressed with the threshold upped.
The change, which takes effect from July 1, 2025, will mean SuperGold households with rates higher than $2000, and income of up to $45,000, will be eligible for the maximum rates rebate.
