Living alone can have challenges – staying within a budget just one of them. However, one savvy Grey Power member, Grace Terry has sent in some great tips and tricks for making solo living easier and sometimes happier.
The magazine will regularly feature tips so check out these first few:
When making the first cuppa of the day, have a 1-litre thermos beside the jug filled with hot water. It will provide enough for two more cups during the day.
Boil six eggs at a time for three minutes, take out two for your breakfast, and leave the remaining four to boil for another seven minutes. Keep them in your fridge for other meals such as an egg salad. As older adults, we need sufficient intake of protein.
Check the contents of your pantry and fridge before going shopping for any more groceries. You may already have enough for another day or two.
To make an easy soup meal, boil up leftover chicken or meat bones with a few fresh veggies (for example, grated carrot, spinach or cabbage leaves sliced finely, one chopped onion etc). Add a soup packet mix if needed for extra flavour or a handful of rice to bulk it up.
Remember to switch your stove off at the wall when you’ve finished cooking and switch off/unplug other appliances not in use.
Keep some basic tools at the ready for simple tasks or clean-ups such as a small brush and a shovel handy for cleaning up spilled flour, etc or a screwdriver should a screw come loose on a kitchen appliance or similar.
