Keeping active and independent as we age isn’t just about fitness, it’s about confidence, connection, and enjoying everyday life. That’s the idea behind Community Strength and Balance classes, a nationwide initiative supported by ACC’s Live Stronger for Longer program.
Falls are the leading cause of injury in New Zealand, making up nearly 40 percent of all ACC claims. One in three people over 65 injure themselves in a fall each year, rising to one in two for those over 80. The great news is most falls can be prevented by keeping your strength and balance in check.
Community Strength and Balance classes are designed for older people looking for a safe and enjoyable way to stay mobile, confident, and independent. Led by friendly, trained instructors, each session helps participants maintain and build their strength and stability so they can keep doing the things they love – from tending to the garden, playing a few rounds of golf, or enjoying a morning coffee with friends.
Whether you are already active and mobile, or need assistance to get around, there’s a class to support every mobility level and capability. Classes are grouped into three levels making it easy to start safely and build confidence over time.
You’re encouraged to move at your own pace, with a wide variety of options to choose from – including tai chi, yoga, light circuit sessions, seated exercises, or even ballet and boxing-inspired workouts.
There are many benefits to joining a strength and balance class. From making everyday tasks easier to forming new friendships, these classes help people stay active, connected, and doing the things they love. Participants have shared how these exercises have boosted their confidence and helped make tasks like carrying groceries, standing up from a chair and getting in and out of their car more manageable.
What makes these classes truly special is the sense of community. Many come along for the physical benefits and stay for the friendships. You’ll find others just like you in a welcoming environment where everyone encourages one another to take pride in every milestone and achievement.
Stepping into your first class might feel daunting, but you’ll soon find a friendly environment where everyone is on the same journey to live stronger, for longer.
So why not take that first step? Whether you’re into boxing, tai chi, ballet, or yoga, there’s a class for everyone.
