A legacy of care

How a bequest to the Cancer Society gave Annabel the chance to catch her melanoma early — and more time with the people she loves.

At 73 years of age, Annabel never expected a stranger’s generosity would play such a pivotal role in her health – perhaps even saving her life. Thanks to a generous bequest from the late David Blunt, Annabel’s local Cancer Society offered skin check vouchers to local residents. One voucher enabled Annabel to have an examination which detected her melanoma early.

“I’ve been aware of the Cancer Society for many years, and I’m grateful for the support of the team for administrating the vouchers. As a pensioner, this support was greatly appreciated,” says Annabel. “Over the past few years, I have become vigilant about sun damage given my early years growing up in Africa. Like many women of my age, when we moved to NZ, I spent many hours sunbathing, laced with oil, and with little regard for any potential damage in the future. I now realises how foolish I was.”

Since her 40s, Annabel has had several Basal cell carcinomas (BCC) and Squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) removed. These increased in her 60s, and she began having annual skin checks. In November 2024, one of those checks – the one made possible by the bequest-funded voucher – revealed a suspicious spot on her leg.

“While BCCs and SCC’s have become the norm, my skin specialist noticed one spot on my leg which he felt was serious. He suggested we have a sample biopsied along with several other spots on my neck and shoulders.”

The results showed early-stage melanoma. It was removed completely, and Annabel realises how significant that early detection was.

Today, she is “on a crusade” to keep her family SunSmart and she knows one bequest made that possible. No matter the size, every bequest helps fund vital services, research, and advocacy for a cancer-free future.

It’s a powerful legacy of hope and care.
