FROM THE PRESIDENT…Celebrating older people

On October 1, Grey Power associations around the country celebrated the International Day of the Older Person. It was so uplifting to hear about the different ways those celebrations were held.

This was a day to pause and celebrate the experience, generosity and care that older people bring to every part of life. It’s also a time to reflect on how we can better support the health, independence, and wellbeing of our older citizens and acknowledge them, not just for one day but every day.

Grey Power is calling on central and local government leaders to continue improving policies that impact seniors, including accessible healthcare, safe and suitable housing, transport, fair cost of living, digital inclusion, and preparedness for emergencies.

I am impressed by how many of our older generation commit time to volunteering in their communities, passing on their wisdom to younger generations and offering to share their experiences with their children’s children thus giving their grandchildren the love and friendship that only grandparents can.

Without our senior generation, New Zealand would not function at the level it does because we are the willing, unpaid staff in so many areas and for such a lot of functions.

So, as the saying goes:

I can’t think of better words to sum up exactly the manner in which so many New Zealand seniors are using their talents to assist others. Keep up the good work and enjoy Christmas and the New Year!
