Spring heralds pre-Christmas tasks

By Alison Beer - Sponsored

I cannot believe it is September. We have been busy both at home and at work (for which I am grateful) and it feels like time has been on fast forward…. and now Christmas is just around the corner!

The good news… it is Spring!! The weekends at our home will be busy with my husband tending to his garden. Dave has a love for all things flora and fauna, so his garden is his happy place and he is out there constantly; planting, weeding, mulching, pruning, and making sure the garden is flourishing and looking beautiful.

He has a particular interest in orchids and bromeliads, so is always thinking of creative ways of incorporating them into our landscape.

I will be revving up the mower (Dave/Santa gave it to me last Christmas) and tending to our lawn.

In an effort to up my game on the lawn presentation, I will be jumping on the internet trying to find the magic cure for burn patches from the dogs, getting lawn envy from American sites, and trying to kill weeds invading the lawn without killing anything in Dave’s garden.

It’s a tense moment when he sees me outside with any kind of weedkiller or chemical in hand; even ‘wet and forget’ has been vetoed in case I am overenthusiastic spraying it around and kill a plant (I am no green thumb!).

The weekdays will be full-on at the kitchen, getting ready and ramped-up for Christmas production and potentially find- ing a lawn maintenance contractor!

In the three months before Christmas, we place orders for our Christmas turkey, salmon, lamb rack and Christmas ham, then begin cooking and packing meals for frozen holiday boxes and our Christmas ‘tiddlies’. Most importantly, we begin to soak the fruit for our delicious Christmas cake (which always sells out!).

We use my mother’s traditional recipe, FULL of fruit and almonds which are soaked in ginger ale for months… It is rich, dark, moist and delicious. If you love a great Christmas cake be sure to order as soon as you can.

For those looking for an easy Christmas and keen to see what’s on our menu, we will be printing and sending out the Christmas menu with the Spring/Summer menu in mid-October. Be sure to add yourself to our mailing list if you are not already – you can do this on our website.

Our menus will also be available to view / print from our website at the completion of the current menu. We will be taking orders from early November for dispatch mid-December. That’s when the ladies in the office really feel the pressure!

Let the pre-Christmas season of spring begin!
