Volunteers work magic!

Napier President Bruce Carnegie

A strong group of volunteers plus a large and committed membership saw Napier & Districts Grey Power take out the achievement award for an association of up 1500 members.

The association’s monthly public meetings welcome, on average, 120 people who appreciate guest speakers appropriate for its senior age group.

Every year begins with a volunteers’ luncheon and when volunteers have done a decade in ‘the job’ they receive a 10-year Active Service Award. The association presently has 18 volunteers who have given 16 years of service and one volunteer with 20 years of service. In all there are 36 volunteers.

At the end of each year, a Christmas luncheon is enjoyed by 100 plus members.

Throughout the year, Napier & Districts Grey Power is strongly involved with a range of community activities including a Napier City Council initiative, ‘The Positive Ageing Strategy Action Group.’ It has been active for eight years and two years ago, Napier became an accredited ‘Age-Friendly City’.

Members are also involved in celebrating International Day of the Older Persons on October 1 and the association is a trustee for the Hawkes Bay Positive Ageing Trust. It also meets with, and supports, Age Concern Hawkes Bay, Grey Power Hawkes Bay and Hastings at quarterly meetings with Hawkes Bay Hospital management to discuss issues and concerns.

Together with Age-Friendly Ahuriri Napier, the association is among like-minded groups which host a free movie session for all seniors every three months.

The strength of Napier & Districts lies in its 1100 members and its many other activities; it sees its 36 volunteers as a huge asset.

Impressively, for the past six years the association has had five of its volunteers receive the Napier Civic Award for services to the community.
