Save your skin

Even the best kept face and body can succumb to itchiness due to winter’s drying effect on the skin. So, to help reduce irritation and redness check out these tips:

  • Exfoliating is important to remove the dead, flaky top surface on the skin and allow moisturiser to penetrate more effectively. When moisturising dry, scaly skin most of the product is absorbed into the dry flakes rather than into the healthy layers which benefit most.
  • A warm bath can make a big difference especially if itchiness drives you mad in the night. But don’t make the bath water too hot as that may actually dry out the skin by stripping away natural oils. Instead, add a hydrating bath oil to the bath water to help calm itchiness and use a soap-free body wash to cleanse, soothe and protect.
  • Moisturising immediately after bathing when the skin is still damp will help seal in moisture and prevent evaporation. Use a rich moisturiser at least once a day.
  • Wear cotton or silk close to the skin to help ease itchiness. Some fabrics, especially those with a coarse texture, may irritate and aggravate the skin. Consider switching to a soft, breathable fabric for sleepwear.
  • Drink up! We may not sweat as much in winter but the body needs as much water as it does in summer. Hydration is crucial in keeping skin healthy, supple and itch-free. What’s more, water can also help stop lips flaking.
