Why pay an auction house 25% commission to sell your art?

Heritage Art Auctions, based in Whanganui, holds four art/photography auctions each year. Despite being in a provincial city, Heritage has obtained prices, which on occasion, even big city auction houses fail to achieve. For example, in its first sale Heritage Art sold a 17th Century maritime oil painting for $10,000 when it had been valued at $100 by a Wellington auction house.

Last year Heritage sold a large painting by H.W. Kirkwood for $7,500, when his average price is under $1,000, and in April this year the auction house achieved $6,500 for a small watercolour by Toss Woollaston when other auction houses might have achieved $4,000-$5,000. It all comes down to individual marketing.

With buyers across New Zealand and overseas, Heritage Art is keen to extend its seller database and wants to appoint agents across the country who can source potential sellers of quality art and make them aware of the advantages of auctioning through Heritage Art.

There are many reasons why a client might want to work with Heritage Art. Chief among these are the personal service the company gives each client and the lower commission rates Heritage offers – generally 18% on low value items down to as little as 5% on high value art. Valuable artworks are individually promoted both online, by emails and in print media.

Bearing the above in mind, if you know of people with art collections who may be interested in selling part or all of their collection, then have a word with them.

If they are interested in possibly selling, then contact Henry Newrick, managing director of Heritage Art on 027 471 2242. He will have a no obligation, confidential discussion with the potential seller about likely art values and commission rates.

If, as a result of any introduction made by you, artworks are sent for auction, Heritage Art will give you a referral fee equal to a third of whatever vendor commission is agreed.
